The Event content type has been updated. This update:

• Adds a header image to events that will show on the lists of Events under the Events tab, and in the upper right corner of the full Event (under the important information block).

• Reformats the home page upcoming events block to show the month and day of the Event in white text on a black background.

• Standardizes the date display to be a quasi ap style on all the other displays. (three letter month, day, four number year).

• Reorganizes the fields into fieldgroups to better organize things for editors. For example Details and Contact Information.

Content is like water

Responsive web design is an approach to web design aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing and interaction experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones).

This week the web developers updated the Slideshow slide and the Homepage Slide content types of our websites to be more responsive. You can check it out on your large monitor by resizing the Home page (drag the edge of the page from the left or the right) until it morphs into responsive mode or check out the same Home page on your smart phone or tablet.

Examples of Slideshow Slides can be found at http://cfaes.osu.edu and Homepage Slides at https://training.cfaes.ohio-state.edu  Login to your site and check your content type to see if you are using either one of these slide shows. This update does not apply to Extension County sites.

Another addition is an Edit button. When you are logged into your site you will see an Edit button on each slide, you can now make updates and changes directly by using this feature.

Updated documentation for Slideshow Slide and Homepage Slide is here.

This week an update to the CFAES News module was pushed out to most of our Drupal 7 sites.  This update makes some visual changes to how images and dates display in articles, as well as new options for subscribing to articles.

News story images now crop to the same proportions as you see on the news releases located on cfaes.osu.edu.  The size of the image in news story teasers as well as the main story has been standardized using the same model. By filling in the “Title text” field for an image a caption is displayed underneath it.  And news header images now link to the original image when on the news article page.

The Date display in teasers and on news stories has been updated and standardized.

The news page now offers a subscribe button which leads to a rss newsfeed of updates.  Feeds have also been made available on pages based on the tagging field within news.  Links to these tag pages are at the bottom of each article.

The homepage news block now only shows news items that have been “Promoted to Front Page”.  We have set the sites to “promote” all articles by default but if there are articles that should not appear on the home page this can be accomplished by unchecking the “Promote to Front Page” box when editing the article.  (see documentation for details)

Department Home PageDepartment Homepage

A recent update was applied to the Department home pages. This update added three new content areas: Welcome statement, Buttons and a Trending Box.

Welcome Statement As part of the Home page, there is an area directly under the Slideshow Side where you can place a 1000 character (approximately 200 words).

Buttons There are four buttons on the right side of the Department website home page. These buttons can be edited to say something new and/or link to a different website or document. Do not add or delete any of the buttons.

Trending Box The Right Sidebar of the Homepage is divided into five sections: Social Media Links, Buttons, Events, Trending Box and Photo Gallery. Each department can select the type of content to be displayed in the Trending Box from the following: Recent Publications, Twitter Feed or Media Mention.

Cancelled Event
By: BGS, Wednesday, June 24th, 2015

Our Drupal web sites are currently grouped into four template categories:

  • Extension Counties – the 88 Extension County web sites.
  • Drupal 7 Basic – many of our web sites use this template, for example: d7sandbox.cfaes.ohio-state.edu
  • Departments – the CFAES Departments, for example: plantpath.osu.edu
  • Top level web sites – such as: CFAES, ATI, South Centers, Extension Main and OARDC.

Updates are continually made to the four templates. For example the Drupal 7 Basic template Event content type was recently updated to include a Cancelled check box. If you create an Event that is later cancelled, you can simply log on to your Drupal 7 Basic web site, go to the Edit function for the Event and select the Cancelled box. This keeps the Event on the web site and lets your possible attendees know that the Event was Cancelled.

Why would you want to keep a Cancelled Event on your web site? If you have to cancel an event, it's important to communicate with your possible attendees. Let your possible attendees know about expectations for refunds, if applicable, who they can contact with further questions, or if you plan on re-scheduling the event date. You can communicate this in the body text of the Cancelled Event.

On Wednesdays of each week Drupal sends out security updates and patches. Our web developers receive and evaluate these as they come in to make sure we act on any that affect our environment. There were a number of issues this week below is a list of those that affect our environment and what steps have been taken or are in progress. This is just an example of all the “behind the scenes” activates that take place constantly to keep our websites updated and secure. (This is just a small example, many more maintenance and development things happen every day.)

Overlay - There is a security update to the Overlay.  This largely does not affect us because we disabled the overlay for other reasons previously. It was still enabled on the county sites however. The web developers fixed a dependency problem on the county sites and disabled the overlay everywhere else.

JQuery Update - The jQuery update module allows us to switch between versions of jQuery as needed.  There was also a security update in the jQuery Update module an upgrade was performed.

CCK(D6) - The CCK is a module that helped in creation of custom fields in D6. There was a security update to this module and it was updated. This also required an update to the EPN Core.

person content type
By: BGS, Wednesday, June 17th, 2015

There are many websites in the college and they are grouped, for management, by their function within the college. For example: basic template, department template and extension template. Updates to content types are created and applied to template groups of websites.

The person content type for the basic template has been updated. The updates include:

External Profile – If the person has a profile on another website you may put the URL to that profile in this space. Note: The directory categories will still appear in the People listing (unless you choose to hide this profile from the listing). When External Profile is selected clicking on the profile will open the website referenced by the URL.

Degree Information – Degrees the person has completed. Example: PhD Education, The Ohio State University (2015)

Related Links – Link(s) to an additional website(s). Such as the person’s laboratory website, research website or class website.

Hide profile from listings – If this person’s profile needs to be on the website, but does not need to appear on the list of people, check this box.
